On my super m the generator has no output. It has a new voltage regulator(cleaned and grounded it very well when I put it on last week). generator is working when I ground f terminal. What puzzles me is if I ground f terminal momentarily after starting it stays charging. can also shut tractor off and restart later and output is ok. Only if it sits for about a day and start it back upis when it wont charge. sounds like regulator not grounded good to me . anyone have any other ideas? thank you

For sure if she charges good with the Gennys FLD post grounded but NOT as well otherwise, that tels me its some sort of VR problem such as its just faulty,,,,,,,,,Or the field current control relay contacts are pitted or carboned or oiled or resistive,,,,,,,,,,,(try to lightly non abrasivley clean/buff/polish them),,,,,,,,,,,Or the VR simply isnt well grounded. Id insure the VR ground (try a jumper to clean shiny metal) and then check n clean the internal relay contact points and go ahead and remove n wire brush n re atatch all the VR n Genny terminals to be safe. A good old fashioned genny shop could adjust n check the VR, but theres not many or them left in captivity

I'll add to johns ideas that the cutout relay (in the VR)might have a latching voltage that is just short of working when the field poles magnetism decays just a little. But the VR should be providing a near zero ohm path for the field.
I would use a very good meter and check the F terminal on the Vr (with the wire disconnected,
from chassis ground (metal of tractor) to the F terminal should be less than one ohm. If more, that is why the F terminal needs to be grounded by jumper o get it charging. Jim

Your gen should be a Delco-Remy 1100501 or a 1100531 did the regulator go with those #s. When you grounded the field and it charged that means the gen is good so yourproblem is the reg. Where did you get it. Not all parts places list the correct regs for gens. Did it say for positive ground.

I have the same problem on my W9. I got tired of taking the new VR back and exchanging it, so I installed a switch to grd the field each time I start the tractor. I just momentarily grd it. Kind of a lazy mans way but it works for me.
