Farmall M with no spark (help)

I have a Farmall M with a Magneto and it has no spark. I replaced the Points, Condenser and plugs but yet no luck. I'm starting to wonder if it's my magneto that has quit and if so can I rebuild it my self???

Thanks,
Coyote

If you have replaced the points and condenser, that is about all you can do. Be sure the point gap is properly set. I think the coil can also be replaced, but I think you have to press the parts out of the center of the coil. Never done that. Beyond that, look for a professional rebuilder, as some special tools are needed. If you place the mag in a vise and turn it by hand and trip the impulse, you should get a good hot spark at least 3/8 inch long. Take the wire that goes to the center of the dist cap and hold it near the vise or mag body when you turn the mag. Careful not to shock yourself!! If you do that and get a spark, you must have a timing or fuel problem. If you get no spark, time for a new coil or a rebuild.

You may need to replace the magneto coil also, which is a fairly straight forward "do-it-yourself" job, but getting the iron shaft out of the old coil and into the new coil is a bit of a trick, or so I've been told. Digging any deeper into the mag might require some expertise and knowledge to put it back together.

Thanks for all the help,
I was just talking to some one and he said I could take off the Magneto and put on a Distributor? is this true???

Thanks again,
Coyote

Yes, true, but it will cost just as much as getting your magneto repaired. That is unless you do the jury rig and add an external battery ignition coil and use the mag distributor. I don't like that and I've converted a couple back to mags that were done that way.

Before you tear into the mag take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and clean the new points. Then see if you have fire. Hal

Make sure you check the point gap when the rubbing block is sitting on one of the lobes in the mag. That setting is .013". Hal

Thanks for every ones help, I set the gap to 020" witch is what the kit said to gap it to, I'll try to gap it to 013" and wipe it down with alcohol.
If no luck I'll pull it off and see how much spark it has.
I was also wondering If the timing is off will it still spark???

Thanks again,
Coyote
