Power Steering (Char-Lynn) on M Farmall

Power steering on my M doesn"t seem to be as effective as I think it should be. So the question is, on some of you guys tractors with charlynn steering, does it work well at slow speeds? If I pull in a drive way in fifth gear at an idle, it doesn"t seem to work at all. Where is the first place to trouble shoot. Thanks for any help. Bernie

My Char-Lynn works OK at low idle but not great. A medium idle and above and it works good. Still better than Armstrong at any speed.

How well the Charlyn PS works at low speed depends a lot on where it get's its hydraulic pressure.

A dedicated belt-driven PS pump provides very little low flow low engine RPMs. This results in slow (or even no) steering assist at slow speed.

However if the tractor has live hydraulics and the Charlyn is supplied by a priority valve (flow divider) from the live pump, the PS will provide full assist even with the engine at low idle. (The Charlyn on my Super M works from the live pump - it works fine even with the engine idle and the tractor stationary.)

Of course a tired pump or a worn torque generator on either type system will diminish the power assist.

I presume your M is equipped with a belt-driven pump?

My experience is just the opposite of Bob's... Dad had a JD 60 with a Charlynn with a Saginaw pump and it worked great. My 240U has a priority flow divider and at idle the steering is jerky... rev it up a little and it's okay. I also loose the 3 point at an idle, no doubt because all the flow is going to the steering. Maybe the pulley ratio on the 60 was better than on an M.

Yep, been all thru that.

If you are using the belt driven pump, the pump is getting weak. Takes the same power steering pump as a 60s-70s Ford truck (truck, not a pickup).

Thanks for info guys. My Power steering pump has the resoviur on top of the pump. Is this the same pump as the Ford truck. Thanks again Bernie Steffen

I have the Char-Lynn on a Super M and a different brand on another Super M and both have the same problem; little or no assist at low engine speeds. One runs off the old style belly pump, and the other runs off the live pump. My front end loader on one also doesn't work as well at idle as at speed.

If you could install a smaller pulley on the pump, it would have more flow and work better at lower RPM. This is no doubt the Saginaw (GM) pump like we had on the JD 60.

Allen that looks like a new pump in picture, do you know what engine or truck model of ford trucks used that pump?
