Update on the C wiring

So I got the C to charge...but the switch gets real warm and when I turn it to HI charge the meter goes all the way left real fast and my lights don't work.Any ideas? But it does charge fine when in low,its a 4 position.weird that it gets hot??

The lights may have a short in them. First remove all the bulbs and see if it still discharges. If so the wires need to be traced to find the fault to ground. On dim the switch will get warm. but not hot. There is a resistor on the back for Dim lights. In the L charge position the other resistor is heating to reduce the field current. Also warm. If it is getting hot, it may be the place where there is a short. Jim

Assuming this is regarding yesterday's post. Is it still wired same as those pictures? Is the gray wire from the L post on the regulator the same gray wire that goes to the bottom resistor in the picture with the light switch.

If so there is your problem. The L post from the regulator is "Load" and feeds the lights and the ignition in tractors having a distributor.

If wired as assumed above, the resistor is the regulating resistor that would go to F post on the generator when using just a cut out instead of a regulator. A regulator controls the field automatically and does not use the High Lo side of the manual switch.

If my above analysis is correct, disconnect gray wire from the light switch, use it to feed input to the switch and use the switch only for lights.

When you put the manual switch in Hi position you are putting a dead short on the regulator which will load the system, cut voltage to the lights, cause ammeter to show severe discharge and make heat and smoke.

When the F terminal on regulator is connected to F post on generator there should be no connection to the bottom resistor on the switch.

Ok thats makes sense. So where do i put the gray wire end thats on the l post now.To the F term on the generator?

No, only 1 wire goes to the F on generator and with your regulator it would be from F on regulator. The regulator is automatic so we give it priority.

You could either completley remove the gray wire from the L on regulator, or disconnect the short red ended wire which now connects on the ammeter with the green wire and connect this red wire to the L terminal. This is the wire that feeds the light circuit.

Then the regulator will automatically control generator output and you would use the switch for lights only.

The switch had the light section and the Hi-Lo generator section. They switched together but were separate systems so there is no problem switching just the lights with the switch.
