Super M Alternator Conversion

I am in the process of mounting a Hitachi alternator on my Super M. It will bolt up easy enough, but it seems I am going to need to put on a slightly longer belt, which means the other 2 belts will need to come off-out of the way (power steering and water pump). I was wondering if anyone else experienced the same, or maybe I am missing something on how to use the existing belt. I was wondering if the old generator pulley might give a little more room. Does anyone have experience with this that they might be willing to share? Thanks.

There are three solutions. A bigger pulley (as one from the original made to fit) This is not best, but works well.
Replace the belt with a shorter belt (removing the main belt is difficult but can be done with care. (the pulley on the fan must be loosened on its threaded center to allow the belt to drop down to get it off of the lower pulley.) It is possible to do W/O removing the fan if done with care!
The third way is to use a link style belt that is purchased a little too big, then links are removed to adjust it. It can be installed W/O removing the main belt. Google link V belt.
Do not over tighten the main belt, it runs with about an inch of slack when pushed in with the thumb. Jim

Thanks. I just ordered a link v-belt. That's a great idea. Sounds like they are well made and will outlast a regular v belt. It beats having to pull the other belts off. I'll go ahead and finish the installation and the belt should be here by Friday.

The alternator is on and it works great. The belt arrived today and went on just perfectly. It was very easy to convert. Thanks for the help.

Dang. It worked great last night, but this morning, I went into the barn. I happened to touch the alternator and found that it is warm--after sitting all night. Tried to start it and the battery is down. Unplugged it for now and removed the bat terminal wire.

So, I must have some wiring reversed. One problem I ran in to...the Hitachi alternator terminals (2), besides the battery, are not labeled at all. I was not sure which wire to run to the bat terminal. The other terminal ties into the ignition switch on the run side. I had to switch the wires because, when I first started it after installing, it would not shut off. Maybe I am hooked to the wrong side of the ignition switch. Thought I had that figured out. It is supposed to go to the "run" side.
