I have a chance to purchase a IH 1256. Is there any odd quirks or problems they might have?

nope!damn good tractors,just be sure to check the TA.I own one.SN:7696.(1967-early one)I would buy another one in a heart beat.

I have a 856 with a 1256 motor in it. Lots of torque. One of the best tractors built. If it is in good shape not beat up you will love it.

How exactly do you "check the TA?"

Unless the seller will let you hook it on his field cultivator and run it for a couple of hours, there is NOTHING you can do that will tell you anything useful about the condition of the TA, unless it is completely shot.

You are right.But you can at least see if it will shift while test driveing.And you have to trust that the seller is being honest and truthful about whether the TA works or not

i think that you can kinda tell if the ta doesn't have any low end just driving it around.
