3 Wire Alternator Diode Q

Do you have a Radio shake close by?? If you do just buy a part #276-1661 cost you all of $2.50 and you get a pack of 4 and they are way way over kill and work great. Been using them for a decade now and keep them on hand all the time

3 Amps rating should suffice for the alternators required initial excitation current and 100 volts withstand rating is plenty so YES it should work okay, rememember its polarity sensitive so for Neg ground its Cathode band should be towards the alternator.

NOTE instead of a diode one can use EITHER a 10 ohm 10 watt resistor (no worry about polarity) as it also prevents the run on problem PLUS provides some degree of current limiting safety ORRRRRRRRRRR instead one can use a small incandescent idiot light charge indicator to be on when shes NOT charging but off when she is ORRRRRRRRRRRRR use the idiot light in paralell with the current limiting safety resistor so she can still charge should the idiot light burn out.

Got it????????????

In theory, the 100 PIV 3 Amp diode should be more than adequate.

Since there can be some nasty voltage spikes in the primary ignition circuit (where the diode gets it's power) from the coil when the ignition is switched off, I use 1000PIV diodes and have never had one fail. I HAVE seen an occasional failure with low PIV diodes.

I buy them in quantity for only about $.05 each.

Bob... alternator guy.

Thanks guys, this was a freebie, so I'll start here, and if the spike get's big enough to kill it I'll buy the 1000V version.

A Delco 10SI and 12SI can draw just a hair over 3 amps max. on the exciter circuit. Just use a pair of those diodes, wired in parallel and it will be fine. They cheap at Radio Shack.
