This is my fisrt Farmall a super c delivered Sat.I thought the batery would be a positive ground but it's neg. ground. The ground cable was on but the positive cable was hooked to the starter but was not attached to the battery..What do I check? Was the battery hooked up wrong? It's a 8 volt battery..Thanks in advance for ideas....

Is there a problem? If so you did not describe any.

The tractor came from the factory negative ground. It has a very simple electrical system, which could easily be converted to positive or negative ground in a few minutes:

1. Swap the wires on the battery.
2. Swap the wires on the ammeter.
3. Polarize the generator.

Odds are it was not hooked up negative ground because it was "supposed" to be. More likely that someone who didn't know any better hooked it up negative ground because that's how everything is hooked up these days.

8 Volt battery indicates that the previous owner was having problems with the starter. It's a band-aid for a sucking chest wound. Odds are that simply cleaning the battery cable ends, or replacing the battery cables would have fixed the problem with a stock 6 Volt battery. A Super C does not turn over hard, and does not NEED a 12V electrical system. 12V is nice, but not absolutely necessary.

Mike...IF it still has the original generator (BIG if cuz so many people have cobbed these up over the years!) Then it SHOULD be a positive ground...doesn"t mean it won"t run the way it is...just not the proper way. You will have to polarize the gen and voltage regulator (just search it here...it"s done ny jumping accross two terminals and I cannot remember which ones at the moment) then hook it up properly with the pos side grounded and the heg to the battery.
As far as the 8v battery...it will be OK in your system although unless someone has adjusted the regulator accordingly it will only be charging enough to essentially make the 8v battery into a 6v battery ( I have never adjusted a V R my self...the only time we ever run an 8v battery is on the Super Ms when they are freshly rebuilt as they are a lil tight and the compression is high.) If your electrical/ignition and fuel system are good and well tuned a 6v battery is PLENTY for a Super C...no reason to go to 8 or have an ugly old alternator hanging out the side cuz ya went 12v!

I know ypu Know this. He indicates his is setup (but not hooked up) so it will be Negative ground. that is wrong. Not bad, but incorrect.
Your first statement is that it cane negastive ground. It was Positive from the factory.
Jim

The neg. cable was grounded to the frame and attached to the battery. The stater wire was attached to the starter but not the battery...

Check the coil, the distributor is the ground, if the + goes to the distributor, change the battery cables around. If the + is on the ignition side of the coil then is is wired for neg ground, it is wrong but that is what someone did.
