303 combine engine in a 656?

I have a 656 with a bad bottom end,also have a nice running late model 303 combine engine,does anyone know if this engine can be transplanted in the 656?Thanks for any input.
 
Well with out knowing what engine is in the 303 as i never payed much attention to what engine was in the I H combine as i have never owned one or worked on one i do not know is it is a C263 or not. BUT i do know that it will not be a direct bolt in as the ft timing cover will need swapped out along with the rear engine plate oil pan and pick up manifold carb and some other things. Myself i am lazy and why would i want to tear down two engines to make one when i could just REBUILD what was in there and then know what i have , but that is just me .

303 used the 221 same as the 460. Same block as the 263 but less cu in.
 
What would your honest guess on how much it would cost to have a IH 6 cyl gas engine, rebuilt from top to bottom? No cut corners now. WHat would it cost?
 
Been awhile since i did one and my price books are way out of date . The last one i did before i closed up shop was my good friends . And on that one we went big time on his .as it was line bored decked contour bores recut , cam rebuilt new lifters total head job and c/ced all new springs all rotating members balanced , nothing went untouched . I would have to dig out the bills on that one to be sure but thinking that with parts and machine shop was around 2000 plus labor . Was it worth it ?????/ i do know, that is one sweet running 706 gasser . It runs so smooth and a lot more power then it had before . It has been running for the last 9 years and it is the first tractor that is used and the only tractor that is used all winter for everything . When a tractor is needed the first words ya hear is get the 706 , not the 806 or the 1066 or the 720 or the J D A it is get the 706 .
 
Early 303 used the BD 220 truck engine which is only slightly different than the ag version C-221. Both are sleeveless engines of course.

The C221 is a sleeved engine.
 
When Dad had the C291 engine in the 756 overhauled close to 20 years ago, the bill was $4500. It was an obvious screw-job by the dealership. He complained loudly but that didn't get him very far; they knocked off a few hundred dollars...

To add insult to injury, the #1 cylinder developed a nasty piston slap within a year that nobody seemed to be able to fix. They'd replace the piston and sleeve, and it would be hammering away again within 6 months. [BTW, he always uses IH Low Ash SAE30, he was getting 92 octane gas, and the timing was spot-on... it still kept eating wrist pins on the #1 cylinder].

Anyway, I would anticipate a bill close to $4000 for a no-holds-barred overhaul of the engine. That's not including taking the engine out and putting it back in.
 
Well you are correct on getting HOSED . As for #1 piston always knocking out the wrist pin then i would be looking at the rod , the bore or the crank as something was not wright on that hole and like most dealerships just get it in and get it out as long as it makes it thru warranty it will be fine . There is a lot of difference between parts replacers and a true mechanic . Oh and i just looked up the old parts prices that went into my buddy's 706 that we took his 263 and made it into a 291 and that kit cost me 685 plus the valve kit . And then there was the boring line boring decking contour bores re cut , and a total rebuild of the head along with a C/C job on the head , rebuilding the cam and regrind and that was 90 bucks and 200 for the balancing and with labor it was just shy of 2400 .
