684 Hydraulics

I have just picked up a 684 International. Tractor is in good shape, but when the hydraulics are not being used, the pump seems to be carrying pressure and the tractor sounds like it is carrying a load. When you raise or lower the lift arms or auxilary hydraulics the tractor runs easier. It is an open system, should it being carry any pressure?

Hi the 684 has an open center hydraulic system and engine should be under no load until hydraulic valve is opened. Check that draft control lever is fully forward. Make sure remote hydraulic control lever returns off position (center). Check hydraulic filter and screen for being clogged. The hydraulic circuit is split into 3 gpm for PS,PB and PTO, 9 gpm for 3pt and remotes by MCV valve behind the hydraulic filter under the left foot rest.

Check the aux levers, they are on your right and low down, I have been called out to some of these tractors only to find a lever has been accidently knocked in to pump, one of the breakdown symptoms was flat battery and the tractor would not start, as the hydraulics loaded it slowed the starting motor.
Another problem was with a new owner and I dicovered (eventually) that a front loader had been fitted at sometime and removed prior to the guy buying it, the out let to the front loader remotes had simply been plugged, instead of the proper end plate being fitted to the tractors remote valve.

Thanks, I did a little experiment and attached a hose to both outlets. The tractor ran like a champ, no pressure sounded great. I thought it must be in the auxillary vlave so I had it rebuilt. It may have helped, but it still has some pressure. It did have a loader on it before I bought it, so if you could would you tell me a little mor about the tractor problem.

May have a power beyond end plate on aux valves and when loader was taken off the outlet and return were not rerouted to provide a place for oil to flow. Was loader controlled by aux valve outlets or from the power beyond .

Can't find out for sure, but it does make sense that may be related to the end plate. I didn't know how the oil completed it's cycle, but from what you guys are saying it has to go though the aux valve to complete it's cycle. Another thing that puzzles me, is that on the end plate the plug is the side of the plate not on top like I see on the spec sheets. The 3 holes in the pump do line up though, maybe there were a few made like that.

OK, if a loader has been removed then the aux hydraulic return tube from the aux control valves to the draft control module under the seat was probably removed and never re-installed after the loader was removed.
There is not a good picture of the aux return tube at caseih.com parts for 684 but lookup parts for the newer model 3230 hydraulics page 8-024 item 18 Tube assy Aux Valve return.
