Found a real nice looking 5088. I have never drove one. It should equal my 1486, has the same motor but can anyone tell me about the transmission. I know it is a power shift with 18 speed. Can you power shift it thru all the gears like the 7120 & 7130 CIH magnums? How many speeds in reverse? I guess it still rides like the 86 series.

It has a two speed power shift in front of a three speed syncro, mid mount hyd main clutch, three syncro range trans. Reverse is not syncro and you will have the three speeds with two speeds power shift in reverse. Ride somewhat better than 86 series due to longer wheel base. My opinion on that. You can do a lot of shifting on the move under no load but is no way full power shift. Full planetery final drive, pfc hydraulics and about 45 gals on hy-tran to keep her going. Power shift (actually IH referred to it as power command) is monitored by a computer called the sentry or watchdog for smooth shift and control of the activating solenoids. Lot more tractor than the 86 series.

Make sure all of the gears work, had one with the low side out, IH wanted $7,000.00 to rebuild it

Can you power shift through the gears like a magnum? LOL LOL. That is funny. They are alot better tractor than an 86 series but only if they have all the transmissions updates done. I have driven one and they are nice to drive. Dumb part about them is the reverse airflow radiator.

My father-in-law bought one new and still has it. He has a lot of hours on it and it has been pretty reliable. He had to do some transmission shifter repairs. Has never touched the motor, it has a lot of torque, and the turbo seems to work better than on the 66 series tractors we had. I have run it some, and the cab and the ride are both better than the 186 hydro he has. The only thing I didn't like much was the position of the hydraulic control handles. He used a front-end loader some, and it seemed to tire your arm a lot operating the handles.
