350u Won't crank

Tried to wake up my 57 350 Utility this past weekend from its Winter slumber. Charged the bat, pulled the "key" and pressed the button...nothing. Checked all the wires, still no go. I can jump the posts on the starter and get her to crank, but not catch. If I have the wife press the starter button it will run until one of us stops the magic (this works whether the ignition "key" is pulled out or pressed in). I have a rain delay right now (the only reason I"m not sleeping in the dog house yet) but it is going to be damned hard to till with one hand on the starter and another keeping that wire on the solenoid, while looking ahead, behind and below all at the same time! This work horse was converted to 12 volt before I bought it years ago. Any thoughts?

Clean all battery connections until they're shiny. Even clean the area where the battery is grounded. Then with the ignition switch in the on postition and the points open use a volt meter or test lite to see if there's voltage on the small terminals of the coil. Are you using a solenoid on the starter? Hal

I have had some experience with this, check that you have juice to the starter button from the key switch. I think you will find a bad connection at the switch or the switch has gone bad.

We followed wires, checking components as we went and finally got under the instrument panel. This is where the power stopped. When we shorted the two posts, it would crank. I replaced the gage at Napa and she started right up. Now I can till--but as soon as I'm off the hook, I'll be back to seek help figuring out what happened to the lights and the charging circuit!!
