My cub has a positive ground with a six volt system. Between the battery and the starter is a solenoid type mechanism. This will most often "click" when the start button is depressed but the starter will not turnover. Hitting it with a object will cure it and the starter engages. My question is what is the purpose of this mechanism and what is going on inside?

Thanks

It's not a "solenoid type mechanism." It's an actual solenoid.

Its purpose is to conduct the high-current electricity from the battery to the starter motor.

What year Cub do you have? If the Cub is from before 1975, the solenoid is a retrofit.

Cubs before 1975 had a heavy-duty starter button in the dash panel, or a pull rod for a saddle-mount switch right on the starter itself.

Either replace the solenoid, or put the tractor back to its original condition.

I agree with mkirsch, and if the solenoid is a "retrofit", most likely it is the same solenoid as used on countless Ford cars and trucks. Should be easy to find, and relatively cheap in price.

To get another solenoid, they list a 6 volt solenoid here on the website under Farmall, cub, electrical. It looks like a universal type - similar to the old Ford solenoid. Another place would be your local auto parts or tractor store.
