What am I gonna find?

Lil brother was usin' the Super C, clutch return spring broke, he kept using it and some serious squallin started in the torque tube area...he drove it in the barn and parked it. Now a cpl months later I had a chance to get to it I backed it outta the barn and it worked but was still squallin', towed it to the shop had to start it and back it up a slight grade to get it in...now it's locked up tighter than a drum.
My first assumption was that the tube that the throwout bearing rides on came lose and was spinning, worst case scenario maybe an input shaft bearing, now being locked up I'm a wonderin...tranny shifts well, and clutch works fine but she's bound up when ya let the clutch out. Brakes feel a lil funny, or maybe ring gear bound up? Gonna start splittin' this weekend...any guesses? TY Pete

Initially I have more questions than answers, but will try to help.
Do you mean that the engine can only be started with the clutch pedal depressed (clutch disengaged)?
Can you roll the tractor back and forward with the transmission in neutral and clutch engaged?
Can you roll the tractor back and forward in all of the gears while the clutch pedal is depressed (clutch disengaged)?
While I do not not primarily support your assumption that the transmission input shaft bearing is bad, you can easily check that by putting the shifter in neutral and pulling the transmission cover. Try to wiggle the input shaft.
My guess is that something is wrong in the clutch area (fork for throwout bearing collar, throwout bearing, cluth fingers, pilot bearing).

Pete, this is one of those "take it apart, see what's wrong, and fix it" situations. Nobody's going to be able to tell you with any degree of accuracy what's wrong with your tractor.

My best guess is that the "squallin'" is the throwout bearing. The return spring keeps the throwout bearing from contacting the pressure plate and spinning all the time. This is what the clutch pedal free travel is for. Free travel is the gap between the throwout bearing and the pressure plate.

When the spring broke, presumably the pedal fell forward, causing the throwout to run against the pressure plate all the time. The bearing eventually overheated and cooked the lube out.

As for why it locked up, that's anybody's guess. It could be the throwout disintegrated and bound up the shaft. It could be a totally unrelated problem.

in as far as the clutch, throwout bearing was squalling some and yes is shot but the loudest was at the back end of the torque tube. Tractor acn be started with clutch depressed, not while engaged, if you try to leat the clutch out it binds and stalls, but and you cannot roll it even turn the engine over not running when the clutch is engaged...brakes feel funny too! Letting the tranny cover bolts sit in PB blaster...already twisted one off! Have some drilling and tapping to do when done! Thanks Pete

Throwout beaing is still in one piece...dryer than a popcorn fart but whole...assuming it's tranny or rearend the way it's bound. Oull it alot and i have seen the ring and pinion go in them before.n Like i said, the brakes feel funny too, I'll get 'er torn down this weekend and find it...was just gettin some preop opinions! TY guys!

Having read your and Mkirsch' replies, I'm puzzled. Throwout bearing is probably toast. "Funny" brakes may point at differential failure but that does not rhyme with your being able to roll the tractor in neutral.
Good luck in finding the problem. Hendrik

I think the clutch is still OK, It may need a new T/O bearing and spring, but I might replace the disk if it shows wear. The symptoms might be indicating a locked bearing in the trans main shaft. (either front or rear)
In that trans, the lay shaft takes out the power. so in neutral, there is nothing in gear to the main shaft, allowing the rear to be free to roll in Neutral.
If the main shaft was frozen the clutch would also lock up the engine when the clutch is engaged (trying to drive the trans). Best of luck. Jim

Wonderin' if any damage to the t/o bearing might be from it bein' one of the original graphite-block types. If one of them was to wear wrong and then bump up against the clutch fingers, it could rip a ragged chunk out of the graphite that could bind somethin' up. If that's what it is, you'll be in for a new modern-style bearing and the carrier to hold it.

If you haven't torn it down yet ---- sounds like when my Farmall locks into 2 gears at one time while shifting. You have to clutch it to start, and let the clutch out everything just binds up.

The fix is simple --- just unbolt the transmission top (about 6 bolts), lift the top & shifters off, manually put all the gears in Neutral, put Shift Knob in Neutral, and bolt back together.

A lot simpler & safer than splitting a tractor.

I was in the marine business for 7 years. I saw a lot of outboards in for major repairs that "the brother" had borrowed. I know it's not intentional, but it sure seems to happen a lot when "the brother" or "the brother-in-law" is using them........
