706 generator to alternator

I have a 706 gasser that is currently running off a generator. It
works fine but does not put out enough juice to run the lights I
added that I need for doing nightime work. I just got one of the
delco internally regulated generators. As I understand it I just
need one wire to the battery and another wire hooked into the
ingnition. For the ignition wire I was just going to splice into the
wire that opens and closes the fuel shut off when you turn the
key on and off, would that work? Also the generator has 2
wires hooked to it but I am having alot of difficulty finding where
they lead to, anyone one here know? I M hoping one of them
will work for the wire to the battery but I am assuming there is a
voltage regulator somewhere that might or might not be an issue
if I do use that wire, if anyone has any advise on that I could use
some. Thanks for your help fellas

Well if your going to and alt. that puts out more amps then there is more to it them just hacking into the gen wiring as it is not heavy enough . For and alt. you need a 8ga. wire and as for the one wire deals i myself will not use them . what you need is the harness for a later model 06 with and alt. and a reg . My one good friend runs a 65 706 with a gen. and it has two headlites mounted on the side of the hood and two work lites on the back and after i put halogen lites in it there is no problems seeing at night and the gen has no problems keeping up . The two halogen on the ft. are brighter then the four on my 806 .

Take the wire that was on the A terminal on the generator and attach it to the alternator. At the regulator take the wire from the BAT terminal and splice it together with the wire from the GEN terminal. The other wire is not used.

If you want you can take both wires from the generator and connect them to the output terminal of the alternator and then take all three wires from the regulator and splice them together. Either way will work.

The Terminal #1 (small spade connector on the side of the alt.) can be hooked to the carb solenoid, but it will still need a diode in it, or a dash light sized bulb type light. This allows exciter current, but prevents feedback to the ignition circuit that could cause it to run with the key off. A 100 ohm 10 watt resistor will also work.
The bulb, diode, or resistor are not connected to ground, they are connected with one lead to the alt #1 tab, and the other to the source of 12v. If you use a diode, the Band on the Diode is toward the alternator. Jim
