On a 263 gas engine what purpose does the fuel shut off solenoid on the carburetor serve. Will the engine run under a load satisfactory without the fuel shutoff solenoid. Thanks for all replys in advance.

The fuel shutoff solenoid shuts the fuel off when you turn the key off. I have seen tractors that the solenoid has gone bad have the end cut off, but you don't have the safety factor anymore.

The carb solenoid is provided to prevent a hot engine from dieseling (running on) after the ignition is turned off. Certain other big gas tractors (JD 3020, 4020 etc.) have 'em too.

I am guessing yours is bad, I have never seen a bad one(broken wires don t count)but I have seen a lot that were stuck from bad gas(ethanol), try soaking in ATF and then work it by hand, then hook it to a battery and work it some more. If it retracts once it will free up.

As others have said its to prevent run on when shut down hot. I have had two fail on my 706 over the years, the coil in them burnt out. When it is energized it acts as the needle valve to control fuel flow at full throttle. 560's had just a adjustable screw in place of the solenoid. You can by the screw and collar from CNH and install them in the 706 carb. Cheaper than a new solenoid but you will have no run on protection.

Buy the needle valve, nut, and packing and replace it. I used the one that is called for in the 656 carb found at caseih.com in the search for parts. Just like any other jet open it at least 3 turns and up to 5 turns if you run wide open a lot.

My 2606 had the original solenoid that also had a jet adjusting screw. They don't sell them anymore. The guts of the solenoid didn't work and was gone and prior owners just put an oring around the solenoid and screwed it in and out like a jet. But it leaked some.

I've run mine for hours and runoff problems. Probably more of issue with plowing all day and shutting them off when hot.

Any engine needs to be idled for a while anyway if ran hard for a long time.

Besides, you don't want to leave it with gas in the carb anyway especially with the gas they sell now. Put a quarter turn valve in the fuel line. When I'm done for the day, I turn the valve and let it run out of gas. Then I have to remember to go turn the key off but I pull it out any way so it won't be too easy to steal or have someone borrow or joyride it.

buy a new solenoid, screw it in, hook up the electric wire, problems over, takes one minute, assuming you are having a problem, and you will stay protected
