Worn axle on Farmall M

New wheel bearing will not fit snuggly on one front axle of MD. Apparently previous bearing went bad and spun on the axle wearing it down.Any fixes for this, or should I be looking for a new lower bolster? I would rather fix it if it is possible. Any suggestions appreciated.

Try going around the axle couple rows with a center punch, as in knurling. If it's still too small your in the market for a used bolster.
They are quite inexpensive though. Can be bougt around here for $25.

Could look at putting a speed-ie sleeve on it to bring it back out to specs. A good machinist should be able to fix you right up. OR look for a new bolster for around 75 to 150 bucks or so

You could probably TIG or MIG it with a few dots if it needs a little more than the center punch has to offer.
They are about $40 for a decent one in WI.

Almost all processes that cost less than a different good bolster lower unit are not going to last. They are not expensive, and the bearing needs to have a solid contact to distribute load well to the spindle. Jim

I think I have a new old stock front bolster. Never used. I need to verify it is still there. I could bring it to RPRU if you are going there. If interested, send me an E mail.

I checked and I do have the M front pedestal with axle and two castle nuts. Still has the remains of the parts tag on it. Casting number 6719 DD. E mail me if interested.

Thanks, gentlemen, for all of your replies. I was able to find a lower bolster locally with good axles, so guess my problem is solved. Thanks again for your interest and input.

How much was it and in what state?

In NY where everything's pricy. He wanted $100 and wouldn't take less, and since it was in good shape, I bought it, after quibbling about the price. At least I didn't have to pay shipping from somewhere else. I'm sure in the midwest, it would be about half the price. You might say he had me over a bolster. Ha Ha.

I would say twice was pretty accurate :) It is what it is...
