H motor knock

Grandpa has an OS-4 (same motor as an H) that has a knock in the motor. I'm no mechanic, and Gramps can't really work on it anymore. Any ideas at what I should be looking at? Other than the knock, the motor starts and seems to run pretty smoothly. Only ran it at idle and not for long because of the knock.
Thanks for any guesses on the problem.

Drain the oil into a clean container and look for metal particles. Probably need to drop the oil pan and take a look at the bearings. If the crankshaft is scored the engine will need to be torn down. May be a good time to do a complete rebuild. Hal

It could also be a piece of carbon in the combustion chamber, and not a bearing. Did the knock just start immediately, was it progressive, is the oil pressure fluctuation pulses at idle?
If there is metal particles in the oil, pulling the pan is the right thing to do. Jim

Take a piece of hose and use it like a stethiscope, moving around the motor until you kind of zero in on it, then come back and tell us what you heard.

Thanks for all of the great advice, and the timeliness of replies. Gramps decided to drop it off at the local dealer for diagnosis. They have a good reputation with the older tractors.
