Farmall Cub PTO ???

I know this has been discussed before but I have forgotten why a Cub PTO turn backwards? "Also what can be done so my son in law can use my sprayers which have roller pumps on them with his Cub. I don't think these roller pumps will build up pressure turning the other way. I don't understand why all the other IH tractors turn one way except the Cub.

Thanks Robert in MD.

The Cub PTO turns at engine RPM and in the same direction. There is a straight line from the crankshaft pulley to the PTO pulley.

All other IH tractors have a parallel PTO shaft which is reduced in speed with a gear set.

You have to understand that the Cub is a cheaply made tractor and has abundant shortcomings. Get used to it.

Rotate the pump foot mount 180. If the pump has an input shaft on both sides, it will simplify the rotation as you can use the same bolt holes on the sprayer frame.

I would have to disagree with being cheaply made, or else there wouldn't be so many out there still in use if they were. I have had a cub hangin around my house for the past few years and they are handy as can be. All the cub implements work just fine with that pto but doesn't help you at all. I remeber reading about a PTO reverser kit that was sold by IH or maybe aftermarket to be used with most other pto driven implements that turned the other way. Hope this helps.

Lousy pilot bearing.
Lousy throw-out bearing
Built without sleeves kits
Cheap carburetor
Governors that wear out
Prone to break at flange at right front of motor
Prone to break at front bolster
Prone to break at rear of torque tube
Prone to break at axle housings
Prone to break drive shaft
PTO engagement problems
Only one of two flathead engines produced by IHC. The other was the Green Diamond engine in trucks.

I am sure that others could add to this list.

The PTO reverser and reducer to 540 was made by Hub City Gear. They are no longer mfdg. I suppose you might luck out on eBay someday.

I own a "one-owner" Cub that was purchased in 1948 by my great uncle. It has never left the property.

]Amazing that with all those faults they were able to sell any of them! I guess thats why they were only built from 1947 to 1979.
