Gasket Question

Am starting to work on a Farmall M transmission and will be replacing a number of leaking gaskets & seals (front of countershaft, PTO housing, axle carriers to transmission, etc). When reassembling gaskets do you use any type of gasket sealer or cement along with the gasket? If so, any specific product recommendations? Or will the gasket alone be sufficient to hold 80W-90 gear lube? I also will be opening up the belly pump housing with its gasket--any advice about that gasket? Thanks in advance.

Keith, I use rtv silicone or permatex on gaskets
and wheel greese on seals. I don't no if is correct but I like rtv for oil and permatex for water. oldiron29

i use permatex hi-tac gskt. spray. spray your gskt. leave it one minute then install it and it stays put. does not get hard either.

Keith,
I second Rustred on using Permatex Hi-Tac.

I also believe the key to a “No Leak” repair is in the surface preparation regardless of the particular sealer you use. I clean the mating surfaces with mineral spirits and then with denatured alcohol. Then spray or brush the sealer to both surfaces as well as both sides of the gasket material. I have very few leaks.

Good luck with your project,
Art
