i bought a 1942 farmall H. it only has 3 gears plus reverse. all the people i have talked to or books i have read said they had at least 4. is this a common thing for this year?

I checked my usual places and found nothing on an H with a 3 speed trans. There was an F12 and F14 built in 1938 and 1939 that lists both 3 and 4 speed trans - but the F20 (the one the listing said was closest to an H) lists only 4 speed

Do you have the numbers off the serial number plate?

yes i have the numbers and they all come back as a 42. ive messed with alot of tractors in my life and so have my family and friends. and we all have never heard of one have a 3 speed either

War tractor that came on STEEL REAR WHEELS so 4th was removed or blocked off.

What do the rears look like? are they like a normal H or are they the originals cutoff with rims added?

What you got is a war baby there, in 42 and 43 there was a rubber shortage and if you wanted a new tractor you got steel wheels. Axles were the same. Imagine going 15-18 mph on steel lugs. Thats why no road gear. Someone changed them out for the normal H wheels later.

Thank you so much that has been driving me crazy. I've owned it for about a year now. Runs and works great just never could figure that out. My 3rd is around 14mph

Wow that's great! That helps me a lot. Great information that puts things in perspective for me. Thank you. if you run across anything else like that don't hesitate to post it. I'd appreciate it

5th gear was the gear that was blocked out. The gear was present in the transmission but a bolt was installed through the deck near the clutch pedal to keep the 4/5 shift rail from moving forward into 5th. Tractors with 5th gear have a shorter bolt in that position.

My guess is that you are not finding second and third. the shift pattern is:

R 2 4
1 3 5

No way does third go 14mph. Are you sure someone hasnt been in the tranny and pulled a great big redo for pulling. You mite need to pull the tranny cover to get a better idea of whats going on. Your shift rails mite be messed up. Find another H and take a good look of the shift pattern. Just never know what someone has done to a 60pluss yr old tractor. Something is messed up with yours.

You can pull belt pulley assembly in a few minutes and look inside to see what is going on.
