I am working on a 1948 Farmall H that came to me without a fuel strainer, it just has a fitting screwed into the tank and a shutoff valve attached to that. I purchased a new fuel strainer assy for an H but it doesn't fit. The fitting on the fuel stainer is larger than the threaded hole in the tank. Did early model Hs use a different fuel strainer? If so, how can I make my new one work?

Take the old fitting from your tank to the store where you got the sediment bowl. Compare thread sizes before you buy.

Are you sure there isnt a bushing in the tank and are you sure you got the correct replacement same old story never know what someone has done to an old tractor

Randy has it dead on!

Don't think you're gonna find one with a 1/4 in pipe thread. When we converted our 40 M from distillate to gas years ago, we took the sediment bowl to a machine shop and they turned the inlet down to 1/4 pipe and threaded it. Been that way for 40 yrs or more.

Thanks for all the responses. Tractor is "less than original" so anything could have happened. I have been looking for brass fittings in local hardware store to convert fitting but can't do it without making it look like a Rube Goldberg contraption! I can do it simpler in galvanized but not sure I want to do that. Still working on it!
