My backhoe doesent move anymore

First time user to this site. My old IH 2500b backhoe is getting tired and dose not want to move anymore. It has a standard clutch and trans, 4 speed with a high and low range( 8 forward gears and 4 in reverse). It started loosing power to the rear wheels and would only work if the RPM's were up. Then it started to only move when you reved the motor and after a few seconds it would take off with lots of power until you pushed in the clutch. Then you have to sit there with the motor reving until it would move again. Now it dosent move at all. I found a piece of an o-ring in the hydraulic oil filter. Not sure if this tractor has a hydrostatic drive or is the clutch the problem. Can anyone help me with this? Brad

It could have a torque converter (not a Torque Amplifier) and a clutch. If it does (parts book is very important here) the Torque converter might have a bad stator clutch, or it could be the charge pump. Fluid level might also be low, allowing the thing to be an Air converter. Best of luck, Jim

It could be a clutch, I just wasn't sure if it had a hydro drive behind the tranny. If this machine is just a standard tranny, drive shaft driven then i guess its time to split the case. Brad

The tractor has a torque converter like an automatic transmission on a car, so technically your tractor is hydraulically driven. I don't know if it has a clutch at all. What you call the clutch pedal is probably actually a foot-inch pedal, that allows you to inch the tractor forward or back in a controlled fashion with your foot.

My tractor does have a clutch pedal. Normally you would have to depress the pedal to engage a gear or change direction of travel. Currently, I can put the tractor in gear with a small detection of gears grinding without depressing the clutch. I need to track down a repair manual.

Chrysler/dodge Hydrive or Tip-Toe Transmissions in the 48 to 52 line of cars had clutch and torque converters. I have driven several industrial machines Dozers and FEL with this setup. The trans was shifted like manual trans (it was a manual) and the Convertor allowed crowding the loader and other less easily done operations at reduced wheel spin/speed. I think it has this cross concept design. They have a charge pump, a reservoir, and some times a cooling system. Jim

Hi Brad not familiar with 2500B but I believe it is similar to ag 574. You said it had Hi/Lo/Rev and 1 thru 4 trans which is same as 574. Does it have a T/A or Forward/Rev lever on left side of dash opposite side to throttle? Have you checked clutch adjustment? Should be 1/2" or more free travel before it engages throw out bearing. Adjusted by adjustable rods connected to clutch pedal. If it is the clutch it should move in 1st LO and not move in 1st Hi.
My brother's 684 would sometimes not start moving unless you put trans in N and released clutch and then depress clutch again and put in gear. We changed clutch but didn't fix problem. Had T/A replaced by eliminator shaft and that fix problem.
Hi side of T/A clutch relies on hydraulic pressure from a small hydraulic pump in bottom of torque tube.

Hi Jim, no it does not have a lever on the left side dash. Clutch has 1/2 inch of play. I don't think it is a clutch problem because it would grab hold after revving the motor for 20-30 seconds, unless the clutch gets hot from friction and takes hold but you could not detect any clutch smell. After it would grab and take hold, it had lots of power until you let off the throttle or push in the clutch. Then you would loose all forward movement, and need to rev to get it back. Now you can rev all day and all you notice is it trying to move with small jerking motions, Thanks Brad

I'm no expert on the hydrostatic drive but it sounds like you have a problem with it. A standard clutch wouldn't act that way. Yours may have the combination hydrostatic drive and clutch plate with the clutch pedel that pushes down as opposed to forward on a car, truck, or regular stick tranny tractor.

Go to caseih.com and search for parts. Put in 2500 for the model and click on the 2500 for north america. Then click on drive train. There are a series of 07- numbers. Look at the diagrams of each and then tell us what you have. 07-04 shows the clutch assembly that goes with the hydrostat unit.

Your hydrostatic unit will have hydraulic lines going into and coming out of it while a standard clutch and stick shift tranny setup will not and the clutch pedal is different. Once you let the guys know what you have, then they can help better. Good luck.

Thanks for the input!! I went to caseih and found 07-04. My tractor does not have any hydraulic lines coming out of the clutch housing, however the tractor is not split open so the diagram dosent help me much but 07-31 is my control lever as is 07-13 is my clutch control. The site indicates I have a synchromesh transmission. I just don't know if i should split the case and look at the clutch or is it something that can be accessed through the plate over the differential. Brad
