in a previous post, i stated having trouble with super a. It sat for 12 years got it running it wants to run wide opn. Took off governor found a bumper spring broke, replaced thinking this was the problem, now I took it back off and found ball bearings all over inside the governor , it was the bearing between the two washers (on shaft thrust bearing) was shot, woll this keep the tractor from idling down (adjusting throttle)?????Please educate me? What exactly does it do!!!

That little bearing is right smack in the middle of the works. The governor is of a flyball design, and works by balancing the centripetal force of the turning weights with springs acting in various direction on the different parts. The bearing itself is around the thrust shaft. All of the spinning parts in the governor spin around that shaft/spindle. One side of the bearing rests on sort of a bushing that the weights act against, the other face of the bearing acts on the shaft that operates the arm that actually adjusts the carburetor, so it does need to be there and in good repair.

Now about the bearing itself. It could be just fine, just all come apart. In its normal state, as a brand new never installed part, the only thing holding it together is a few dabs of grease sticky enough to hold the balls between the two cups that form their races. Once installed and the grease spun/worked out of it all that holds it together is the tension between the various parts of the governor. It's not at at all unusual for it to come all apart and send little balls flying everywhere the second the tension is taken off the thrust shaft when the governor is removed.

The bottom line is that YES, a failed thrust bearing WILL prevent the governor weights from forcing the throttle butterfly to the idle position when the throttle lever is set to "idle".

I had an O-12 with all the governor thrust bearing balls in the bottom of the sump, the bearing cages had disintegrated after a bearing further up on the rock-shaft failed after someone brazed the shaft together after it had broken

If the input shaft wobbles you need to but a vushing there as that will help the throttle respomse . I bore them out with a cutter and install a 5/8x1/2 brass bushing makes them work like new again. A good machine shop can do it or you can sent it to me ive done a bunch of them for readers.
