H cooling system part 3 with more pictures

I took it apart today and found a few things out. One is that there is no thermostat in the housing. I don't know how to put a new one in. I'll be getting one from NAPA, probably. I have the head off, there are no obvious cracks or damaged places to my eye, although there is a lot of rust around the head gasket packed into the spaces between the head and block. The head gasket has been there for a while because it had at least one layer of paint over it. I'm thinking of putting in a new head gasket and a thermostat and seeing if that takes care of the problem with the coolant bubbling, but should I be doing anything else first or instead while I have it apart? Thanks very much for any advice.

I tried one of the auto thermostats on my first H project and it did not work that great. Put a IH expensive one in and the gauge would move after that.

The thermostat you will get from Case IH will appear different than the old style ones. It just sets inside the housing, no parts or special adhesive required. Do it right get it from case IH.

well for one thing you need to check for warpage. good thing you left it as is for pics. between cyl.2+3 AND 3+4 it looks like a problem area. even look at the gskt how black it is between cyls.its tellin you a story. i suggest u take it to a machine shop and have them check it. i can almost guarantee it needs to be planed at least .030. then he will tell you how the valves and guides are. you got it apart so next step is do it right. if it was bubbling like that without a thermostate hate to see it with one. but be sure to put one in. spring end goes down.make sure block area is shiny and should be checked also. and also when its cleaned it will be checked for cracks cant tell when its in this condition. puttin it together this way is just a waste of time and money.

The spot that caught my eye is at cylinder 1, at about the 11:00 position as shown in the first picture, from the cylinder to the water passage.

Thanks for the detailed advice. I'll look into where there is a machinist in this area and see what I can find out.

I don't like all that oil in the exhaust manifold. I'd sure take the head to a machine shop for full rebuild.
Why not drop the pan, and that #1 piston and measure it and the rings for tolerances. And the rod bearing too. Use plstigage.
