internatinal 240

hi, i am looking into buying an internatinal 240 utility from a guy down the road from me.. it looks pretty good.. but it has 4000 hours on it..im not farmiliar with this modle.. the tractor comes with a 7ft sickle bar mower and a loader on it for 3500. is this a good deel.. is 4000 hours alot of hours for this tractor?

A 240 is basically an updated Super C with more RPM's, more power. Most had fast hitch or easily converted to 3pt hitch. Same basic engine/transmission setup. The hours are probably OK. We had a 'C' for 20-25 years and it spent many 40 hour work weeks per year doing something, some hard pulling, hard to tell how many hours were on it. It was overhauled at least once during that time. But it was still a solid tractor. Now that angled back front end on the 240 utility could be troublesome with a loader, you would just have to check it out for condition.

Lots of "ifs" here.... if it runs good, if the steerig is not loose, if it has power steering, if it has a 3 point, if the loader is in good condition, etc. That should be about top end on price for one. I just checked the hours on mine and it "shows" 723 hours... I'm sure that's not right because the tach was not working when I bought it, but it did start working on it's own and works now. Mine has PS, 3 point, 2 aux. valves, added pump off the crank for the Wagner loader.

So u don"t think this would be good.. I"m not planning om any really hard work. Just mowing and pullin some small trees from the woods

Would this tractor be good with this manyh hours for just mowing and pulling small trees from the woods.. I'm not planning on plowing jus pulullin trees and mowing and draggin and disking some trails

Do u think tbhis tractor would be good with this many
hours jusgt to pull some small trees out of the woods and
pulling a drag and disk.. also using a bush hug and sickle bar

The hours wouldn"t bother me as much as the loader. The weak point on these is the front end/steering. If the loader can be removed when not in use that would be a big plus. Otherwise you can"t help but stress the steering every time you use it.
Price depends on location. In Western Oregon I paid $3700 for mine with loader and mower.

Yes, the loader right now is detached from the tractor. How's the load on ur tractor? Does the hydralics and everything work well

Do u like this tractor? Does it get tbhe job done do u think I should look into buying this even tbho its got 4000hrs on it..is3500 a good price

Without checking, that's about what I paid for mine two years ago. It needed the steering box repaired because the arm was loose and wore out the shaft out the bottom of the box. Somewhere in it's life, someone had replaced the steering arm with one from (as far as I can tell) a 404, and the gear had been turned 180 degrees with a new keyway milled in the shaft. It would hit the hole in the casting when turned end to end because the arm did not have enough offset in it. I bought both the gear/shaft/arm and worm gear assemblies and now it works fine. If it has PS and uses the tractor pump, the loader will be slow and I think that's the reason mine has the added pump and valves. The loader reservoir is in the frame of the loader. It appears at one time the tractor system had been used for the loader. with the added pump and valves, the loader is fast and will lift anything I have tried so far. I try not to overdo it because of the reputation of the weak front end. Also on mine, the power steering takes enough flow from the pump that when idled down the 3 point won't work. Get the engine a little above an idle and it works.
Mine had a fresh paint job on it when I got it, so it looks pretty good for a 1958 model tractor, except the side panels are missing as they seem to be on most of these. It does start and run good. One big drawback to these it that for a late '50s tractor you'd think it would have an independent PTO, but it doesn't. You will miss that when mowing.

i have a 240 utility with a fast hitch. great little tractor. excellent with a brush hog, and the low profile is nice on steeper ditches. i loaded my rear tires with calcium. mine is missing the side panels too.

Sounds a little high to me but who knows what it's worth but you. I made the side panels for my 240 U out of roofing tin. Suits me. David...............

That many hours over 50yrs isnt very much as thats only 80hrs per year. You dont sound like you would be using any more than that so it should last you for a long time just give it good care and park in a shed it will serve you good. That price wont even buy the loader for those new fangled types with all their gadgets and switches to cause trouble. You can even tune it up yourself and you can change oil and filter for 15.00 go for it.
