strangely acting H clutch

took my '41 H out for the local Memorial Day parade today. After getting into the parade queue, I sat idling for about 15 minutes before my group started moving. I had the H in 1st gear as there were lots of groups walking ahead of me. I was crawling at idle in 1st.

About 1/2 way through the parade (~3/8 of a mile), I had to slow down. I pushed in the clutch but was unable to disengage it, so I killed the engine and the tractor came to a halt. I quickly found out that I couldn't clutch in either 1st or 2nd gear, but 3, 4, and 5 worked fine.

When I got home and let the tractor cool down, everything was normal and I could shift in or out of any gear.

Anyone have an idea of what was going on?

The [u:9bef9a7ede][i:9bef9a7ede][b:9bef9a7ede]exact[/b:9bef9a7ede][/i:9bef9a7ede][/u:9bef9a7ede] same thing happened to me once - except I was on a 1945 M and it was the 4th of July Rodeo Parade in Arcadia, Florida. Additionally, I had been to the Eagles, Elks and Moose clubs (on my tractor) for some refreshments before the parade.
Rather than crash the float in front of me, I turned 'er into the front window of 'ol lady Tisdale's Shop For Ladies. I remember it was a horrendous crash.
The next day I learned I had been photographed by [b:9bef9a7ede]The Arcadian[/b:9bef9a7ede] (the local newspaper) with some women's dainties still resting on top of my head. The M was unharmed, although the top 1/3 of the steering wheel was bent rearward, probably by the trip through the front window of Miz' Tisdale's store. Truthfully.,....., I don't know exactly what happened. I never did find my Stetson hat to this day.
That was 1985. However, my clutch has never done that since. (Neither have I.)

Sounds to me like you were riding the clutch and it got hot. When it cooled off it was ok.

the only thing I can be sure of is that I was not riding the clutch - foot was firmly on the deck except when I went to engage or disengage the clutch

just a thought, have you ever greased the pilot bearing? the flywheel should be drilled for a zerk fitting. on the m (should be the same for the h) you rotate the engine around, there will be two timing notches close together, and then one all by itself. line the single one up with the pointer and then look up into the drain hole on the bottom of the bell housing. you should see the zerk ther. give it 2-3 pumps of grease, not too much or it will leak out on the clutch disk. if you dont have a single notch, have a helper slowly hand crank the motor around and peek up thru the hole with a flash light to find the zerk.

there is a grease zerk on a long tube that is directly ahead of the clutch - its accessible from directly underneath the tractor

I haven't pumped any grease in there in recent memory - I'll give it a look

thanks

that is probably for the throw out bearing if its connected to a long tube. the pilot bearing one is on the flywheel.
