Basic diesel question

I have a 574 with the German 239 in it. Smokes quite a bit on start up. After it is warmed up it will smoke when not under a load, but under a load it does not smoke and runs smoothly. Have found that under 1500 rpm it smokes less when not under a load. It is white smoke (unburned fuel).

I understand it is fuel delivery, but is it the ejector pump or the ejectors? Or a combination? I keep hoping for a simple, cheap fix but am looking for an explanation.

may be worn injector tips, not actually producing an atomized spray mist of diesel.just kinda pis-ing. pretty much need to remove injectors and have them checked by qualified personel.its a start. its deisel and not cheap.

I would pull the nozzles and have them checked and rebuilt if necessary. Relatively easily done but isn't altogether cheap. Checking the fuel pump is more tricky because you need to get in correct time when replacing it. Similar to issues when removing and installing a distributor. Having someone work on a fuel pump can be expensive. It is possible but unlikely that your compression is low and the engine needs to be rebuilt. I certainly would throughly check the fuel system before even considering this as a possibility.

Your white smoking under no load over 1500 rpm is an indication of the automatic advance not advancing far enough or static timing too late. Need a window on pump to observe automatic advance while running. Fuel pressure is critical on that which would mean you have to have a full flow of fuel to pump through clean filters for starters and proper fuel pressure which is adjustable on those pumps. Lot easier to check than nozzles and very little expense. Realize of course those engines are prone to slow cleanup of exhaust expecially if they still have the low compression pistons in them and possibly valves have been ground to lower valve protrusion and of course comp ratio.
