Farmall 140-Cut off won't start...HELP

I have a 1985 Farmall 140, don"t do much tobacco farming anymore, but use the tractor for odds and ends around the farm. Finished bush-hogging a couple of acres today and was making my way back to the house and the tractor simply cut off, like it ran out of fuel. Only problem is that the tank is full?! Tried to restart and it turns over fine, and tries to start but won"t fire, sounds like a fuel issue to me...any ideas on what to check or a quick fix? Thanks!

First I would have someone squirt some gas in the carburetor while you turn it over and see if it will start.
If it does you will know if it's a fuel issue.

Could this be vapor lock? I've had a tractor shut off when it got really hot and then start back up when it cooled down. I just rerouted the fuel line away from the exhaust manifold and pipe and all has been well ever since.

Just a thought. You may have entirely different issues. Sometimes the coil will get too hot and quit working, too.

Pull the gas line at the carburetor and see if there's full stream of gas to the carburetor. If there's just a trickle you have blockage between the tank and carb. Look in the tank with a good flashlight for any crud in the tank blocking the outlet.

Squirt some starter fluid around the throat of the carb. If it doesn't fire you need to pull off a plug wire and see if there's fire to your plugs. You will need a helper to do this. You need your ignition on too. If there's no fire I would clean the points. You need to make sure battery voltage is at the coil. With the points open you should have battery voltage on both small terminals with the switch on. Hal

It cant be a 1985 tractor the last year they were built is 1979. So if it is a very late model tractor it has a saftey start switch on the clutch pedal. They have been known to cause trouble so if you have spark and gas check the the wirring under the pedal and see if thats the problem. I just unplug both ends and put a peace of wire in there to connect the two together and that bypases the saftey switch. Just an idea ,Erik.

If it is a 140, this is what I would check...

See if you have a good spark at the spark plug while having a friend crank it over.

If no spark check for 12 volts at the coil and look at ignition...

If good spark remove the fuel line at the carb and check fuel flow. (also look at inlet filter where the line connects, it could have a piece of rust, rubber..)

If good flow I try a small amount of starting fluid in two cylinders and look at the plugs att the same time - if the look wet or bad try new plugs. If it starts and cuts off you probably have a fuel/carb problem.
(my 140 once had an intake bolt that backed out, would only run with the choke on full. Took me a while to figure that one out)
