I have a 53 Super H it has always ran great. Today while baling hay it just started missing. I removed the plugs thinking one of them maybe carboned over that did not help. Adjusted the carb some still didn"t help. It still starts good but when revved up and under load it is missing bad. any ideas what could be wrong would be appreciated.

before you start replacing things i would pull of the plug wires 1 at a time and see if its just one cylinder or if all of them are doing it... you may have a stuck valve in one cylinder or a broken valve spring.

if it seems to be in all cylinders then i would lean toward something more common like the cap, rotor or coil. those coils can go bad from time to time and cause pretty bad misfires.

I had a similar problem with My H this spring and found some corrosion on the plug wire ends and in the sockets of the distributor cap. Like your H, it was running fine then one day it just started breaking down under load. Once I cleaned the cap and wires up, all was normal again.

In addition to the other great suggestions, it could also be that the manifold gasket has failed you. In that case, air could be getting into an intake passage and leaning out a cylinder. Also, sometimes a manifold will develop a hole - usually on the backside, for some reason - from corrosion over the decades. That will also cause a lean miss, often in more than one cylinder. Make sure the two carb stud nuts are tight. Hope these ideas help.
