Super M volt reg(long winded story)

My son's friend bought his grandpa's super nice super M that's about as nice and origional as a tractor that age can be. It wasn't charging so he called me to look at it. I was in a hurry so the first thing I did was ground the field and it did charge, so I told him the regulator was bad and I left. Today he replaced the reg and still no charge. I looked at it this eve and I first checked to see if it was wired wrong, but that was OK. Then I grounded the field and it charged. Then I clipped a jumper wire to the regulator ground strap and grounded the jumper to what I think was a clean ground. There was still no charge and I was so stinking tired I couldn't think straight, so I gave it up till morning.

The old regulator looked like it might the origional from the factory so what I'm asking you Farmall guys is do I have a mis-matched genny-regulator? Was there a change in replacement parts sometime through the years?
He probably does have the right reg and I simply haven't found the problem yet, but just out of a whim I thought I'd ask. Jim

Oh yeah, he did put an 8 volt battery in it and it's hooked up positive ground.

That "Oh Yeah" about an 8 volt battery you added at the end IS KIND OF IMPORTANT ya know.

If you have any old fashion mom n pop type of genny starter repair shops, they can tweak/adjust a factory 6 volt Voltage Regulator to better charge an 8 volt battery. Thats my suggestion.

YOU ASK Is it mis matched?? YES but it can still work and work better if adjusted for an 8 volt battery.

Is it mis matched?? Again yes to some extent, many of the late Chinese after market VR's are more generic one size fits all UNLIKE a more correct genny to VR closer match as original.

Is it mis matched?? Again SOME VR's are suitable for Pos or Neg Ground, while others are for POS or NEG ONLY so that could be another issue.

BOTTOM LINE: If its well grounded and if it ONLY charges if you dead ground the FLD post, its EITHER a VR problem (bad or mis match),,,,,,,,Or VR isnt well grounded,,,,,,,,,,Or the wires bad form FLD on Genny to FLD on VR

Thanks for the reply. He did get the regulator from a Case IH dealer but that doesn't always guarantee a quality part anymore when it comes to the older stuff. I'm a kind of a purist where I like to leave things factory, meaning 6V with a genny, not an alt. but I do question Farmall's judgment in not going to 12 volt for an engine this size. I am not going to have the time to look into it this weekend but I hope to soon. Jim
