PTO problem on 48 Cub

I have been in the rear end of this tractor 3 times trying to get the PTO to work. I have put a new bushing in the end of the shaft, new bearings in the other end, replaced the lever that slides the collar to put it in gear twice($60.00 each) it will go in gear and run just fine but when I put the belly mower on it will jump out of gear immediatly. Sorta getting tired of this stuff. Any advice would be appreciated. ED

I bet the splines are worn enough and lets the force move it out of gear lots of them get that way. ,ite just need a new output shaft.

Does your Cub have the metal retainer around the pto lever? Once the lever is pushed down and moved to the other position to engage the pto, the lever should spring back into the other hole location on the retainer. The retainer should keep the lever from jumping out of gear.

be sure the alien screw is secure not let it slide back you may need some lock tight that is my opinion [ on your slider]

Now that will depend on which end is bad if you remove the pto assy and a good look at the splines you should be able to see which end is the bad one.

I had that happen to my Cub after I had completly rebuilt it. For me it was the PTO input shaft that was bad. Problem is that the input shaft is also the trasmission shaft and drive shaft from the engine through the transmission. It is over 3 feet long and requires splitting the tractor to replace. A good source to purchase one is on the Cub web site at TM tractor parts. When I bought mine several years ago they only wanted about $120 while CaseIH wanted $300 or $400 for it. I looked at their web site and didn't see it now, so may have to contact them. The one they supplied was well made including hardening of the splines on each end. Good luck, hope it is the PTO end that is bad. They also have PTO shafts, but they are on back order I see. Roger
