Just replaced the following on my 47 H. New 6V regulator, rebuilt 6V generator. Wiring is correct, generator was polarized properly. Ammeter shows slight charge at engine idle or wide open. Shows high charged when switched to do so. Question is when the lights are turned on it shows a dramatic discharge; is this normal or even with the lights on should the ammeter indicate a positive charge?
 
This is not correct. The high charge condition is normal in H position. The lights (in D or B position also put it in high charge for the gen. The lights are "engineered to use about as much current as the gen can manufacture at medium speeds and above. This allows continuous use of the lights at night without over charging the battery.
If it is going discharge with the lights on at idle or 1/3 throttle it is normal. If it is discharging at 2/3 to full throttle, it is probably a short to ground in the lights, or too many bulbs (if any extra have been put in it, or on it) Lights draw between 9 and 12 amps, so slow tractor engine operation at night will drain the battery. The ammeter should show a positive charge even with the lights on. You may need to adjust that third brush in the generator, but also, the high/low charge function should be disabled if you are using a regulator. The high/low charge is to be used only with a cut-out relay, which is different than a regulator.
