I just bought this 574 with the diesel engine and the brakes have to be pumped several times to work and the steering is hard as a rock, has a front loader on it and it works properly, I need to know where to start.does the trans and differential use the same cavity for fluid?fluid looks good, checked filter. thanks for any info.

just tried to bleed thebrakes back into the resevoir, the left bleed properly but could not get anything out of the right, air or fluid.

Hi Jack, does the parking brake work? Most
hydraulic problems on 74 series tractors are
caused by someone driving the tractor with the
parking brake engaged and the parking brake band
gets ground up into the hydraulic oil. The brake
band bits clog up the hydraulic filter and then
the bypass valve opens allowing the hydraulic pump
to pump the bits all through the system. These
tractor only have one hydraulic pump and the
reservoir is the transmissions and the rear end.
It does not hurt to over fill by 5 gals especially
if a loader is installed.
On 574 the hydraulic pump outputs 12gpm and the
MCV valve splits this into 9 gpm for 3 pt, remotes
and loader, the other 3 gpm goes to power
steering, brakes and PTO.
The problem with your 574 would appear to be a
stuck splitter valve in the MCV valve. It is stuck
in the position so all 12 gpm is going to 3pt,
remotes and loader. Sometimes it can be unstuck by
pulling the remote outlet lever until you hear the
hydraulic relief valve squeal.

Hope this helps

Thanks Jim for the info,I don't think the parking brake works,as the remote lever, the loader is working off the remote on the right side under the seat, can I dead head the lift mechanism on the loader to try to free the splitter valve or relief valve? Thanks Joe

Jack,
Yes, rotate hydraulic bucket until it limits and
you hear relief valve squeal. Also look for
hydraulic leaks around bottom of dash and from
under top of transmission cover. The hydraulic
lines that feed the brakes run on top of
transmission under the cover to under the seat. If
the splitter valve doesn't release then I will
have to post the procedure to remove it and sand
with 400 grit sand paper as posted by Bernard Le
Mechano.

Jim

luck wasn't on my side,so I guess I'm gonna have to remove the splitter valve and sand.Do you need my email address to send the procedure to?

thanks for your help, Joe

Hi Joe, below are a couple articles from archives
about flow divider/splitter valve by Bernard le
mécano:
The flow divider becomes stuck on the plug end
when you turn the steering until relief valve
activates. Remove the big plug below the hydraulic
filter, remove the flow divider valve and spring,
make sure to replace in the same way. The end that
stops on the plug is round and square, with a
steel saw, make a small groove in the end of the
flow divider. That will stop the suction lock,
when the valve hits the plug.

The priority valve allows 3 gpm to the steering
system. Below the hydraulic filter, it has a big
plug, the valve is in that hole. Remove the plug,
remove the spring and maybe the valve is stuck all
the way up or down. With a fine emery cloth,
remove all scratches on the spool until it moves
freely in the hole.

Fix for MCV Power Steering flow divider:
CIH has a parts kit to replace the flow divider
valve, in the MCV. It's a sleeve with a spool in
it. It will fix your steering problem. Check with
a CASE-IH dealer. Bernard le mécano

jim,

on the bottom of the hydraulic filter, there is two big bolts, removed the front one the thicker of the two,all that came out was a spring and nothing else I looked in there and did not see anything that could come out.on the second bolt must be the priority valve, has a small screen on the end, took it apart and made sure all parts moved freely, looks somebody has been in there before so I don't know if theres any parts missing.I also removed the valve next to one of the steering lines, has a nut looking insert I guess to set the preload on the spring inside the valve. Is there an online parts breakdown of the valves tha you know of?thanks again Joe

Hi Joe, my I&T Shop book is for 684 and I thought
574 was the same but just looked at caseih.com
parts and realized 574 has an older version of MCV
valve and items 15,16,17 make up the flow divider
valve but I only see a plug, seal and spring.
Normally a flow divider has a spring and a ball or
some kind of pop up valve arrangement like the
684.
Maybe Bernard's reference to a kit for flow
divider is to update to new version like 684.

Sorry for misleading you about MCV for 574. Before
PS will work correctly there has to be a 3gpm flow
to the power steering which is the hydraulic pipe
on the left side of the MCV valve.
