im going to look for a belly mower for my new/old cub, [ 1949], from reading it seems like you guys that have them prefer the woods model 59 over the ihc model, am i right? now i need everything as this cub has never has a mower, by looking i dont think its pto was ever used, there is no wear or even a mark on the splines, besides the mower ,and the brackets for mounting on a cub and the belt wheel for the pto, what else do i need to round up? where can i still buy the belt? by the way i got my plow working its ok, but it sure aint grandpapy's M lol

This website will have the answers and photos needed. Work your way threw the site there is alot of great photos dealing with every tool that could be mounted to a cub.

Woods are much better mowers. My IHC mower is not a finish mower. It is more like a bush hog. My Woods is mows like a finish mower. Don't buy the belt until you get it mounted and then it is trial and error to get the right one.

Although 5 ft mowers are installed on Farmall Cubs, it's not the best setup. Two issues, lack of power and no Live PTO. When you start out, it takes about 15-20 feet before the engine can get its speed up. When you push the clutch in, the mower will continue to drive the transmission. This also makes it a trick for shifting from forward to reverse. For mowing a large area of lawn it can do the job, but not for areas that require a lot of start & stop and forward & reverse. Farmall Cubs are rated at only about 8HP. The later numbered series Cub LoBoys with 15-18Hp and LPTO are great lawn mowers.
I have a Farmall Cub with with a 5ft deck as well as 154 & 184 LoBoys with 5 ft decks.

i appreciate the information, ill look for a smaller mower then , i'd love to get this tractor to mowing, my box store rider is about to die [ its only 3 years old] just poorly made, i can deal with the non live pto, most of the areas on the farm that get mowed have very little objects in them except the orchard, and ive been mowing thet for 15 years with a ford

There are only two basic mower options for the Cub:

42" single-blade
59" three-blade

The key to running a 59" deck on a Cub is making sure the mower deck has SHARP blades, and the front of the deck is 1/2" to 3/4" lower than the rear when setting on level ground.

If you've got thick grass, mow more often.

If you can't mow more often, you can take partial passes; just because the deck is 59" doesn't mean you have to cut 59".

As long as your Cub is not completely wore out, and has been tuned up properly, it will have enough power to run the mower. Top speed in 2nd is around 3 MPH, about half what a normal lawn mower will go. If you were trying to run a 60" deck at 6 MPH, you'd need more than 9-10 HP, but you're not.

Both the Woods and IH mower decks are fine, way better than anything you can get on those stamped-steel MTD mowers.

thanks for the info, this cub is fully refurbished so hp should be like new it seems to run real good, hope i can find everything and get here and hooked on before my china made box store rider lays down, its sure not worth spending any money on, pretty poor when you figure it cost as much as my new/old cub, it only lasted 3 years, and with the cub i got a real tractor thats already 61 years old and runs better now that the rider did when new
