Farmall C parts questions

Guys -

My son is in college (thus supposed to be thrifty). His grampa gave him a tired C last Fall, and it now is available to him on campus to do some minimal work.

We've proven that the compression is low and he is opening up the engine to see what some minimal work will be required to make it better, but not like new for now. Planning on just re-ringing it for now.

Have been looking around for rings for the 3" bore engine (hasn't been rebuilt to the over-bore status)and am amazed that the 3" ring sets are around $100, where the 3-1/8" kits are about half that. Does anyone have sources for cheaper rings?

Also, are the sleeves in this engine wet or dry sleeves?

Thanks !

Pete

That is what they cost if you are getting standard size rings. Since there are not many engines out there that require standard size rings, so the cost is higher since the producer has smaller quantity manufacturing runs. They also make a set that i believe is +.003. Not sure of what the costs are for that. The C-113 engine is a wet sleeve.

Minimally, I would hone the sleeves, then inside mic them if you can. The ridge will also have to be reamed (before you hone), or you will break the new rings the first time you run it.

Ridge ream, hone, mic bores, add rings, then do a valve job on the head. You may also want to consider a set of rod bearings while you are in that far. be sure to mic the rod journals to see how good/bad the crank is.

You do that, and your engine will be close to new. also check the oil pump while you have it apart. If you end up with questions, please feel free to contact me here on the boards.

I have a professionally rebuilt head for a Farmall C. It has new valves, guides, springs and seat inserts. Everything is new except the head itself. Priced very reasonable, as it was rebuilt and person never claimed it from the shop. Shipping would be $40 or so, but if you are going to Red Power, I can bring it there no charge for shipping.
