Starting Cub.

I just had the carb overhauled. Got it back on, and it ran. Now, tho, it wont start, I got Eythel gas in it. Itall pop on occasion but thats it. Got new plugs for it yesaterday, but no go.
I was wondering if I could belt it up to my H and let the H start it. I found out the hard way I cant pull it to start it. I shattered the L drop axle.
Tried spraying starting fluid in it also. A couple more pops was all I got.

Take off your air-intake tube, put your hand over the hole on the carb and crank it a few times to see if the gas is getting where it should.

The points are probably closed up If it is a distributor, it is .020" If a mag, they are harder to get to, but are set at .013"
Clean and gap them. Put a tiny dab of grease on the felt rubbing block. Jim

Make sure the venturi is in. It is removable and likes to hide in the soaking basket. The engine will not fire without full choke if it is not in there.

I had it running Fri. I put the rebuilt carb on, but5 had to hold the choke to keep it running. After a minute, it ran with the choke where it needed to be. It floods the plugs easy, and im used to chokeing it to kill it. It always had started up. BUT, thinking that was a no no with this new rebuilt carb, I went and got new plugs. Didnt help. Im 62, and I can only crank it so long for I peter out. Was wondering if I could belt it to another tractor to get the plugs hot enough to fire up. My H had sat for over a month, and the points in the mag, I guess were rusty. I belted it to my CC Case, and in a minute it was running fine. Hoped to be able to do the same with the Cub. Its got a bad seal leak on the rear main. I replaced it once, but it felt way to easy going in, and I guess I got the wrong one. So it gums up the starter. I need to keep it together until late fall when the mowings done, then ill take it apart and go at it again. Ive already got a new seal

you won't get the rear main seal to work right out of the box.
go to farmallcub.com and see who is modifing rear seal retainers to accept a rear seal that will work for you. you send your retainer in to be modified.
good luck
Ron

We had a similar problem with a friends' Cub and it turned out that the governor had been adjusted through the years as the carb got worn and wouldn't start or run with the rebuilt unit until it was reset. If I remember right, I think we extended the throttle rod about a quarter inch or more to get it running like a champ. It's a trial and error adjustment. Good luck.
