H identification

I have a H with no ID tag. Is there any place else on the tractor to tell the year model. It has a flat back at the pto and it is a small shaft 1" 1/8". It is a distallite tractor with steel wheels, and a factory wide front. It has the seat with a small storage area under the seat. I dont think it has a 5th gear. Any help with the year model

On mine the serial is cast into the engine block below the spark plugs (on the right side of the tractor) If I recall there is also a casting number there so it might be a little confusing.

In the archives there are a number of casting date code entries. The code is on most major castings. it is in three parts separated by a cast in screw head. 9*13*B would be an example with the asterisks being screw heads. It is probably a late 1941, (just a guess) Jim

It has 5th gear, it is locked out with a bolt in the front left? top of the trans cover. Not important because the H won't turn steel wheels in 5th anyway. For a 1939-42 H, the engine serial will be the same or close to the chassis serial, although IH did not attempt to match them. Otherwise use casting codes as noted. I,J,K,L are 39-42 respectively.
