i have an early 50s farmall m. i was doing tsome brush hogging the other day and when i was climbing a hill the tractor died. i let it sit for a while, got it started, and it did it again the next trip around. it seems to have plenty of fuel in the tank. the second time i did it i was not able to start it. does anyone no what it could be? has anyone ver changed a seal on the belly pump of one of these units also?

A tractor that doesn't run is typically either spark or fuel. Given your symptoms I'd suspect fuel first. I'd try pulling the plug in the carburator and see if you get a steady stream of fuel for a minute or so. You could have junk plugging the fuel line or the outlet in the tank. I'd also look at the sediment bowl to see if its full of water - should be a screen there as well.

Concerning the belly pump - you will have to drop the pump - its heavy and is better done with 2 people. You'll have to remove the coupling to the transmission, remove the outside elbows where the hoses hook up and the handle the pull rod goes to. Then its just 4 bolts holding it up there. You can insert a rod down the pump to jam the gears and unscrew the coupling. Then you can put in a new seal. You can get a seal number off the old one and go to NAPA or most likely a dealer can get it also.

(quoted from post at 12:28:34 05/24/10) so i should empty the bowl under the fuel tank where the fuel comes out?

That would be a good place to start. The sediment bowl should be cleaned on a regular basis.

My H did that and it was rust clogging up the elbow above the sediment bowl, so I had to drain and remove the tank, clean it out and clean out the plumbing above the bowl and put it all back together. It wasn't too bad and it's been doing fine ever since.

Is their a fuel gauage in the gas cap of that tractor? If so look at the cork float. When that cork comes apart it causes all sorts of problems. BTDT. That and the sediment bowl would be the first place to start. By the way I think you can still get free gas caps from Case/IH if you need one. Armand

same thing happened on our H but we had a extra gas tank to switch it with. not that hard to take off though

It could be that if your hill was steep enought that there was not any gas by the opening and when you were on the level you had gas. I have had that happen and if you let the tractor roll back and get the gas to the front of the tank it will run and then just back up the hill.
