I have a 1954 McCormick-Deering Super WD-9,runs great, love it. Just seemed to develop this power issue almost over night. Tractor has a new battery and started great. I washed the tractor, ran it for an hour or so more, then shut in down and let is sit or the next couple days. Went to start it today and it was dead. Boosted it and ran it for almost 4 hours and it was still dead immediately after shutting it down. There are no lights on the tractor to leave on and as far as I know, nothing to draw power when the tractor is off. As far as I know the tractor is a positive ground, and I believe if you hook it up wring the generator will pull charge from your battery. I think the generator is not charging, can anyone tell me how to test this. Also how to test the external voltage regulator. And how do I know if it is supposed to be a positive or negative ground system? right now the pos. cable is running to the chassis. Can anyone help me? Thank you in advance.

Your tractor was positive ground from the factory. All IH tractors were up to about 1957 or 1958. It's not listed anywhere on the tractor so the only way you'd know is if you learned it from someone else or an IH history book.

In reality, your electrical system will work just fine regardless of which ground you choose. The old generator/regulator systems are not fussy. Swap the cables on the ammeter, polarize the generator, and away you go with positive ground, or negative. You choose.

John T, a member on this forum, has an excellent troubleshooting procedure for generator/regulator problems. His process will be able to tell you if you simply have a bad ground, or if the regulator is shot, or if the generator is bad.

here is a link to the proceedure from the handsome and talented john T. and the super duper charging system figgur'er outer. start testing from the beginning and follow it thru. dont skip a step.
