Click sound 560 axle/brake area

Neighbor brought over his 560 for me to put in the outer axle bearing. He said it makes a click/tick sound occasionally. I did hear it once in a while so I replaced the outer one like he wanted. Made sound more definate, so thought inner one, so went the whole ten yards by removing the diff coner to check it out and have never been in a 560 before. Replaced both sides of axle bearings while there checked the brakes and replaced seals and of course noise still there. I'm at a loss now, any help. The noise isn't there all the time and hard to duplicate, gonna have plenty of $$ and still the same thing. chris

If all bearings are good, look into the brake housing. I guess we never had the 560 brakes apart, but if they are similar to the MTA- 450 brakes, the retracting spring [1 of 3] has probably rusted the hook off & dropped down in the housing. The clearance is unbelievably close between the discs & the casting. We pulled the bearings on the 450 when a brake spring lodged under the discs. The bearings were in good shape but the grinding/ grating noise continued. Pulled the brake housing & found the rusted spring. Worth a look.

been there done that . check your wheel wedges and axel clamp bolts there more than likely a little loose . thats what it was on my 686 .i did the same stuff on it still did it- tightend wheel and axel bolts noise gone. good luck

I checked the wheel to rim bolts and the wedge bolts long before I did anything else. The brakes are in good shape and the springs are all in place. Even looked to see if the wheel itself was cracked and found nothing. chris

When you had the cover off did you check the condition of all the teeth on the gears? A chipped tooth can cause a tick. Maybe something laying in the bottom of the transmission that the bull gear is hitting? Make sure the bull pinion bearings are tight with no damage. Double check all wheel and hub bolts, a hub casting or axle shaft can be worn a bit and even with super tight bolts there can be enough movement to cause a noise. The clamp type castings are known for this on 560's.

Getting it to do it consistently is important. I tend to go with a cracked race in a pinion bearing, or chipped tooth. A contact microphone with an amplifier to assist a set of ear buds in diagnosis is going to help a lot. If it is coming from the differential final drive area, it will show up easily. If it is the wheel, a regular microphone directed to the wheel can isolate the noise to that area as well. Jim
