Adjusting valves on IH 340 gas

Michigan IH

How do you adjust the clearance for the intake and exhaust valves on an IH 340 gas utlity tractor? What are the specs?

Any help appreciated.

remove valve cover.remove #1 spark plug. firing order is 1342. get #1cyl. at tdc on comp. stroke. put finger over plug hole and turn over when you feel air pushing on finger your coming up on compression. running mate to #1 cyl. is #4 cyl. get valves on #4 cyl.on the rock.do this by watching rockers on #4 . when you see 1 valve close and the other one start to open thats when you adjust both valves on #1cyl.next to fire is #3 cyl.so you get #2cyl.valves on the rock and adjust #3 cyl. valves. next is #4 so watch #1cyl.valves on the rock and adjust #4cyl.valves. last is #2 so watch #3 cyl.and get the vaves on the rock and adjust #2 cyl. all valves are set with one rotation of crankshaft. thats why it is good to turn engine over with a hand crank. i think the spec is .017 hot.

Once you have No1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke adjust these valves counting from the radiator valves 1-2-3-5. Rotate engine one full revolution and adjust valves 4-6-7-8 set them at .017 cold as suggested. Hal

that is the method i was taught in school over 30 yrs. ago. myself i dont even remove the plugs, just watch the running mates and follow the firing order.the other way works but i think this way is more presice and less chance for error.

Here's the official IH-approved method...

ya, but my way you dont need a manual, as it all in your computer (head). the other way you need to remember or write down a bounch of #s. each to his own i guess and what you prefer.

Yep, you're RIGHT, WHY bother to own or refer to a manual. WHY would ANYONE waste time with a manual? WHY did IH print them, HMMM... makes a guy wonder!

I did some rather extensive comparisons with valve adjusting procedures. Main reason for the chart is flat rate, quicker they claim. Some engines , when you adjust by the chart, then go over then again following mate cyl firing orders you will see some slight differences. Depends on the ramp on the cam lobe. A lot of high performance cams recommend adjusting only on the exact heel of the cam lobe by turning engine one full turn from wide open valve. If you adjust following firing order you will have all cylinder adjusted to same clearance, other method, you will have some slightly looser and some slightly tighter, particularily on a 6 cyl engine. And, of course, you don't need the book.

thats the way i was thinkin pete. to me following firing order makes more sense to be more exact due to way lobes are. i am not bashing your way bob as i haved used both and prefer following firing order. and yes i have manuals, but some things just stick with a person.i know i dont have to look in a book to set valves and they are done right bob. lots of mech. look in the book and still make a mistake. some people are mech. minded some not. and the way i look at it if your studying the book constantly then you dont know what your doin.

DON'T worry about bashing "MY WAY" as it's NOT "MY WAY" at all, but the official IH "Blue Ribbon" method!
