Is the diesel engine the same in the 400 and 450.

I found a 400 diesel with TA and fast hitch. The fast hitch is the same style as on the 450 for some reason which is the style I would prefer getting. Is the engine the same size or was it like the gas models where the 450 was a little bigger?

The blocks are the same, only difference is The 400 used the 4" piston while the 450 used 4 1/8". Outside of that they are the same. A 4 1/8" piston will fit in the 400D or even the Super MD for that matter.
