Super A bolster threads stripped.

I have a super A with a number of stripped threads where the bolster attaches to the torque tube or transmission on the PTO side. I would appear all of the 4 lower ones are gone and because of this there is a gap forming. I"m assuming I"m gonna have to take the wheel and bolster off, then put in some new threads (inserts, heli coils whatever they are called). Does anyone have any experience with this ? Anything I should or should not do ?

Thanks in advance.

I think you are referring to the axle housing to differential connection flange. It will be necessary to support the differential. take out all the bolts, and remove the axle (a book is a good idea) Then use thread inserts (ready Sert, or equal (I do not like Helicoil in that location, thread inserts are better suited for the task. thanks for the advice Jim, I have the manual, and you are correct about the differential. One question, what is the difference between a heli coil and the thread insert you suggested? Can I drill out the hole using a hand drill, or will I need to rent a magnetic base type to ensure I have it perfectly square?

Thanks again.

For that repair I would use Time-Serts.
For small holes I just use a hand held electric drill. For large holes a magnetic base will give you a better job.
Time Serts

A Heli-Coil is a stainless steel coiled thread insert. A Time-Sert is a threaded bushing.
For small light duty jobs I use the Heli-Coil.
For heavy duty jobs {Like yours} I feel the Time-Sert is the way to go.

Here's the timesert. Hal

maybe you can just put a nut on the inside and bolt it all of the way through! LOL the timeserts look like the way to go to me.

The use of an appropriate drill might be done prior to moving the housing (after jacking it up and getting it flat) The style I am suggesting uses a standard drill and tap for standard bolt sizes, not special Helicoil or off size taps. These are both easier and less expensive to find. Usually the tap drill size will be very close to the clearance hole size. This would allow the housing to guide your drill to acceptable alignment if done off hand. If the recommended tap drill is bigger than the casting hole, it will be necessary to remove the housing and use at least a drill jig to make a perpendicular tap drill hole. Using a drill jig to align the tap perpendicular is also a good idea. Do not drill into the dif housing more than the original depth. If you do it could leak, or a too long bolt could be put in causing interference issues. Jim
my recommended insert type

Thanks for all the advice, inserts seem to be the way to go! I will be taking it apart this weekend to see what else is going on in there !

Thanks Again.
