W450 D TACK drive gear

No longer available from the dealer. They are rare as hen's teeth, almost impossible to find.

Certainly, if I knew where one was, I'd be pouncing on it myself, not telling you about it :)

If the W450 D is serial # 1669 or higher, or was changed over sometime to the last design tach drive, the gear is still obtainable. IH changed the drive 2 times after first design. Last type is identified by a smooth gear housing with no adjustment notches. Housing has a little retainer that goes in a slot to keep gear from going forward into harder mesh with the distributor drive gear. IH used to sell the housing, retainer and gear as a package to replace early type drives. Package NLA, you can still get the gear, part # 369695 R91. If you're good at modification the gear can be made to work in the old housings. Housing bore needs enlarged unless worn bad or shaft made a little smaller and sometimes end made a hair shorter. Works best in the correct housing though.

Thanks for the lead. I'm looking for one as well. However, my Farmall 400-450 parts book (TC-55) has the number as 364 829 R91 with no reference to serial numbers. Numerical index at the back of the book doesn't list your 369 695 R91.. I'll call Hoober anyway.

Wardner, Guess I don't explain good enough in my posts. Part # 369694R91 is available from any case IH dealer, Messicks lists it at $58.06. But that gear is not a replacement for tach gear housings that have the notches on the OD. Near The end of 350,450,etc. production IH changed the gear and housing for the second time and added a retainer to go in housing to keep gear from moving forward and back in the housing. New housing is smooth on the OD and no adjustment of gear clearance was made. Shaft hole is in the center. Don't know why the parts never made it to the parts books, but a replacement package was released and sold under part # 369964R91 to replace all previous tach drive parts after old stock was sold out the old parts (part # you posted) were no longer handled and you were to replace with the package. Package is NLA. unless you find NOS. Package contained part numbers, housing-369692R1 which is NLA. unless NOS. over $150 when they last sold them. Retainer-369693R91, Think there's still some around but it won't do you any good without the housing. Gear 369695R91 which can be purchased but won't work in a standard size old tach gear type housing thats in good shape. Some old housings are worn so bad they can't be used to install a 369695R91 gear in with modification. Unless Case IH has changed them the 369695R91 gear has a metal covered shaft instead of all plastic.
On the W400 tach install, numbers I posted were for a W400 tractor, before that serial break I don't think a tach was offered for the tractors and the shrouds didn't have a hole until after the serial break I posted. IH may have sold a tach package with a template for putting a hole in early shroud housings.

Wardner, since its raining I looked up the W 400 tach attachment package. In 1955 package 364424R91 was offered for gas and LP, it contained a template for the tach hole. For W 400D 364426R91 with a template. The kits used tach drive package 364829R91 which was the first change over package IH sold trying to correct problems with the tach drive failure. The only two parts different in the package with the same fuel from row crop to W series was the tach and drive cable. Agian tach drive package 364829R91 was replaced by package 369694R91 and first put on tractors starting at serial # I-330 1628, I-350 15137, I-450 1669, I-450D 1668, F-350 14363, F-450 22144, F-450D 22156. All tractors near end of production.

Edit note: I posted this on "Modern View" but it did not cross over to "Classic". I noticed that mkirsch has the same problem. I guess that I will only post in "classic" from now on. This problem has happened a few times before. The site's software needs to be corrected.

-------------------------------------

I think part of the confusion comes from the word "housing". Both Dave and IH use the same word for the cast iron distributer mount and the pot metal or aluminum tach gear sleeve.

I can't understand why IH used the multifunction distributer mount (distributer plus provisiions for tach drive) on my W-400 (serial #1728) when they built zero W-400's with a tach. Guy Fay confirms this by not listing the tach on the W-400 but including it with the W-450. I also don't understand why I have a small knockout in the shroud (similar to a 1/2" NPT slug in an electrical junction box). That knockout is positioned perfectly for a tach cable running to a steering column mounted tach.

The tach drive opening is covered with a delete plate. I am guessing there is only a machined void/hole behind it. That should mean no wear. I have a Bridgeport and I am assuming that 369 365 R91 could be installed in that hole after modifications. I would hope that those modifications would be self evident.

But I am still hung up on placing the tach. Sure would like to see a picture or factory documentation showing the installation on the left side of shroud. I could probably go to the next 50 RPRUs and not see a W-400/450 with a tach. Of course, because I am 65 years old now I probably wouldn't give a damn as the last of the 50 meetings approached.

FWIW, my TC-55A with correction # 1 was published in 1-31-58

Terry,

How about a picture of your tach installed on your W-450? If you are not familiar with photo hosting sites, just upload to "tractor Photos" here at YT.

Wardner when I say housing I mean the die cast one the tach gear and shaft is mounted in. The distributor drive housing didn't come with the tach attachments and was purchased seperate if not already on the tractor. Best I can tell the W400 instrument shrold may not have a tach hole up to serial 1841. At 3304 another change was made.
Pictured is early tach drive parts and later one. The little flat piece of metal 369693R1 next to the die cast housing 369692R1 goes in the housing slot and in the grove in shaft of tach gear and shaft 369695R91 to act as a trust stop. When die cast housing is slid in the dist. drive housing it can't get out.
Metal shaft gear 369695R91 out of housing in the picture is one I modified to fit a old diecast housing. On that one I removed .034 from the first step on the shaft behind the gear end.
Next step .002 removed, cable end .033 removed. Depends on the housing on whats removed.
Bottom picture is die cast housing 363815R2 and gear 363816R2. R2 parts were treated and speced closer and shaft running clearance increased over R1 parts.

Thanks Dave,

If I understand correctly, one needs any die cast housing to proceed. The only thing available is the gear and shaft. That can be modified to fit the older die cast housing.

Years ago, I bought something like a 140 engine just for the tach drive and cast iron distributer mounting. I swapped those parts into my F-400 and resold the smaller engine at cost. It now has the late style tach drive with the thrust key.

My 650D (serial #4165 ) was produced half way through 1958, its last year. It still has the scolloped drive housing.

I have a standing search on at eBay for a die cast housing.

I find it odd that my W-400 (#1728) was shipped with the cast iron housing with provisions for tach and my F-400 (#520) was shipped with the non-tach cast iron housing. The W-400 has a non-tach shroud but the F-400 was shipped as seen below on this F-300.
