340 is done!

Split the 340U this winter. put it all back together with not many parts left over.Surprised many people and didn't lose the bet. New TA clutch, rear main seal, rings, Hy-tran fluid and filter, brake discs, carb. cleaned, rebuilt the oil pump and painted some of the tin. Every step of the way I relied on the info on this site, sometimes reading posts over and over till I thought I understood. It runs great! Thank all of you for all your help!

Moondoggie, I have a 340 that the TA is getting weak in, works in all but 5th gear. How did you determine that a clutch was all it needed instead of a whole rebuilt unit. Glad to hear everything worked out.

A bad TA clutch makes it slip in high range. The TA clutch is disengaged when the TA is in use.

PUTTER, I didn't know the clutch was bad till I took the cover off the top of the TA clutch and the large cover off the TA housing (under the steering box). I could see that the clutch fingers were not depressing far enough to disengage the clutch. But I could turn the TA mechanism with the drive shaft and no gear teeth were missing. The split was done at the clutch housing, which has to be done to access either the TA clutch or the TA. Lots of work but very educational. Good luck.
