Farmall 300 questions

I have a IH 300 that I use for spraying and auger work. It starts and runs good but when it is used hard like when pulling a 500 gal. sprayer in the mud or in hot weather it becomes sensitive to sudden load increases and will shut down if you put a sudden load on it. It will not restart for 25 minutes. It also seems to crank over very fast after one of these episodes, loss of compression?. Is it simply overheating or sticking valves maybe? I do detect a little backfire an coughing through the carb when this happens sometimes. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

sounds like the coil is going dead, when it happens
again pull a plug and check spark right away and see
if it has nice hot blue spark. If its yellow or
orange or not there at all, most likely the coil is
the cause.

Thanks for the quick reply, my uncle mentioned the coil a while back. I guess I should listen better.

I can tell you with out a doubt the coil is bad. Mine did exactly the same thing. I had an old retired IH employee diagnose the problem. He installed a new coil in the mag and she has worked like a champ every since. I might mention my H is a 47 model and still had the original coil when this occured. Not bad for, at the time, being 60 years old.
