explanation on H water pump

What is the purpose of the impellar being able to move forward and back? That is what its supposed to do right?That is why they have the spring loaded deal on the end of the impellar shaft.Also how freely should the fan spin?I put new bearings and seals and felt washer.It seems to turn with quite a bit of resistance.

right. The springs hold just enough tension against the sealing surface so it don't leak or else it holds the impeller close to the case. Like mother said, "it's the way the engineers made it"

New felts turn hard, it should loosen up quickly once you run it a bit.

Its like that to hold the impeller in the pump, so that if it wore out, you could repalce it with minimal difficulties. Make sure you grease it up, two zerks, one for bearings one for packing.
