Size of moldboard plow for 1466

Hello, Was wondering if anyone could tell me the optimum size of moldborad plow to use behind a 1466. The tractor has 20.8 x 38 tires on it.
Was thinking a 5 bottom 18 ".
Thanks, YC

As DeltaRed said depends on soil type and what part of the country you live in, flat ground or hilly. In clay soil, 5-18's would be a good match. Thoes 1466's have the power probley to pull 6 or 7 bottom in sandy soil if you can get the traction. I own two 1466's and only plowed one time with the one 1466, I only had a JD 3pt 4-16 plow and it walked away with it in high range first gear. That was in fescue sod ground in early sept.

Pulled a 5x18" plow with a 1066,1086, & later a 1486 for several years. 10-11" deep in Ipava & Sable loams, both heavy black ground. Tractors all had 18.4x38s but know several who use to pull 16 & 18" plows with tractors equipped with 20.8s

I pull 6 16's with my 1066, no problem in clay loam.

I kind of think 5-18" and 6-16" should pull about the same and a perfect match for a 1066. A 1466 should be able to pull 6-18", problem is traction which depends on soil conditions.

I think you need about 1.25 HP per inch. 6-18" should require about 135 HP.

I have a 1456 and pull a 6-16 710 plow on clay. Have 18.4 radials with fluid and get along fine. Use L4 direct most of the time. Once in a while will get a tough spot and pull t/a. In the muck wish I had a 7 bottom on land

Our 1466 will pull 5x16's , In the furrow, through ashpalt.
Heavy clay no problem, had a 6x18 too. In heavy, heavy clay made her really light in the front, with 1000#s on the front. Pulls 5x16's easier 4L torque forward, no problem.

Putting the power to the ground was not a problem, once tires were loaded and 4 Iron weights perside. Before that she'd spin anywhere.

This is with new 18.4 radials, dynoed at 180 horse. Ya just don't run it WOT is all. Bring her up to about rpm speed on the tach and let her go.
I beleive in not working the tractor to maximum all the time.

Hope this helps.
Joe

We pulled a 5 bottom 20" IH 720 for years with ours. Power was never a problem, traction was another matter.
