400,450 differences

Other than the paint and the engine displacemnt, were there any other differences between the two models?

Not a lot, starter push button switch seperate from igniton switch , some refinements in hydraulic system like short hose near pump instead of straight steel lines, on gas tractors, late model 450 went to 12 volts, all diesels were of course 12 volt. Steering wheel if memory serves me. Fast hitch may be different depending on age of 400. Steering worm shaft on power steering model, went to a short one with splined end.

Apart from the paint which is unreliable, the steering wheel, with the large center that covers the steering shaft nut, is the most obvious. The hydraulic valve single and double selectors were extended vertically through the cowl. You could now select without removing the hood side panel. Fast Hitch, when installed, is very obvious as well.

Some of the changes occured before the model change. For instance, six spoke wheels to eight spoke. The seasonal IPTO disconnect lever was no longer standard equipment at some point.

My 400 starts with the key. It has a push button next to it on the dash that doesn't seem to do anything. Is this a dash from a 450 or is it supposed to actually actuate the starter on a 400?

Hey Wardner,

My Dad's got a fairly early 1955 Farmall 400 (4-digit serial in the teen-hundreds), with the 8-spoke wheels and double-bevel rims. That change definitely happened before the model change. Possibly way before.

Does an early 1955 changeover jive with your understanding? Maybe someone put the newer wheels on this one...

mkirsch,

Ya, the wheel and rim changeover happened shortly after the 400 hit the market. I have two 400's with the eqrly wheels.

The 400 started with the key, and the 450 push button was not next to the key so maybe your push button was or is for a horn or whatever.
And also, the key used in the 450 will start the last tractor IH made. 1146 was the old number. I am sure I will be corrected if it does not start the 50 series but I only carried one key for ignition. Cab doors had a few different ones.

The smaller tank on the 400 would not get you to dinner time, so a lot of people bought the 21 gal tank when they became available for their 400.

Hello, I have a 54 400 with withe early 6 spoke wheels and I have 5 other 400"s that are 55 and 56 and all have 8 spoke with double bevel rims. So those must have came out some time in 55 because I have two 55"s withe 8 spoke.
